Townsend, MA Town Information

As of the census[13] of 2010, there were 9,198 people, 3,110 households, and 2,475 families residing in the town. The population density was 279.8 people per square mile (108.0/km²). There were 3,184 housing units at an average density of 96.9 per square mile (37.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.54% White, 0.73% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.


There were 3,110 households out of which 44.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.5% were married couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.4% were non-families. 16.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.96 and the average family size was 3.34.


In the town the population was spread out with 30.4% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 6.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.8 males.


The median income for a household in the town was $61,745, and the median income for a family was $67,173. Males had a median income of $49,340 versus $31,073 for females. The per capita income for the town was $22,658. About 3.7% of families and 5.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.6% of those under age 18 and 6.5% of those age 65 or over.
